The fuzzy fossils include the smilodon skull, also known as the saber-toothed tiger. Though not closely related to tigers, these massive cats had impressively sharp and thin teeth, earning them the nickname "scalpel tooth". Despite their formidable hunting abilities, their fragile teeth could easily break on contact with bone. Smilodon lived in social groups and often fought for food, as evidenced by many fossil specimens with injuries. As the ice age ended and the planet warmed, these magnificent animals, along with other megafauna, started to disappear. Scientists still study this extinction, exploring theories of intense competition and environmental pressures.
