Diplodocus is a dinosaur that will blow your mind with its immense size. At almost 100 feet in length and weighing 15 tons, this iconic long-necked, long-tailed giant belongs to the sauropod group, the largest family of dinosaurs to ever roam the Earth. Diplodocus is just one of the 250 species of sauropods that have been discovered. This particular dino, also known as Dippy, can be found in museums all over the world in replica form. Its reign was during the Jurassic period, a whopping 155 to 145 million years ago. Diplodocus gets its name from the "double beam" chevron-shaped bones found under its tail vertebrae. Its lengthy frame is supported by 15 massive neck vertebrae and a long, whip-like tail with up to 80 vertebrae.
